Marcellus drilling creates new world |
theithacajournal.com | The Ithaca Journal Much has been written,
and will continue to be written, about the Marcellus shale; on one
side about how much money and jobs it will bring, and on the other,
about how much environmental damage may result. But this battle of
words, being waged by gas development's proponents and opponents, is
mostly speculative. There is probably some truth as well as
exaggeration coming from both sides, but the argument may be missing
the point. Here in Susquehanna County we are beginning to experience
the reality - and the reality is very disheartening. (February 23,

Pulteney officials, residents rally against waste plan | stargazette.com | Star-Gazette If Chesapeake Energy goes

02/12/2010: As Anniversary of Recovery Act Nears, EPA-Funded Projects
Yielding Cleaner Air, Water and Land Across New York State; EPA
Regional Administrator, DEC Commissioner Visit Cleanup Project in Albany
(New York, N.Y.) As the one-year anniversary of the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act nears, projects funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) are yielding cleaner air, water and land, and new green jobs
across the country. Nowhere is this better exemplified than in New York
State, where EPA’s Recovery Act funding has spurred cleanups of toxic waste
sites and leaking petroleum storage tanks, cleaner water, and projects to
reduce air pollution from diesel engines. EPA Regional Administrator Judith
Enck and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner
Pete Grannis today visited one such project, the cleanup of an abandoned
gas station and repair shop in Albany, N.Y. The greatest potential hazard
from a leaking underground storage tank is that the petroleum or other hazardous
substances seep into the soil and contaminate ground water, the source of
drinking water for nearly one-third of all Americans. (February 12, 2010)

Clean-diesel buses added to RGRTA fleet as a result of stimulus

Rochester region will be getting clean-diesel buses, thanks to a $12.2 million
grant via the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The Rochester-Genesee
Regional Transportation Authority took shipment of 50 buses in late 2009,
and $1.34 million of those stimulus funds will go to the
2009 bill, according to Jacqueline Halldow, spokeswoman for the RGRTA. The
buses, made by Gillig Corp. of California, burn diesel in a cleaner manner
than older models. They arrive as ridership is up. (February 1, 2010)
