Local Environmental News Rating System
As environmental news grows on the Internet, I will rate local and non-local media
sources as to how well they keep us informed about our Rochester environment.

The best source for local
environmental news on the Internet, focuses on Rochester, New York, including an archive,
a complete monitoring of our environment with updates on major environmental issues, and
links to any subject that pertains to issues important to our area.
A local news service that provides
consistent environmental news, focuses on Rochester, well-written, but does not archive
environmental news and only presents issues when a story flares up.
A local, or non-local, news service
that occasionally posts an environment news story, not very complete, but provides a good
resource for getting environmental news on Rochester and some useful services.

A local news service that rarely posts an environmental news story.
A local news service that needs to
pay attention to our environment.

founded in 1989 to protect those lands that define the character of the
Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. To date, the Land Trust has
protected more than 8,800 acres of the region's wetlands, forests, farmland,
grassland, and gorges. This has been accomplished through the establishment
of nature preserves that are open to the public for quiet recreation, the
use of conservation easements (voluntary agreements on private lands), and
the provision of technical assistance and educational programs to local
governments, landowners, and the public.

"Conservationist

with photos, articles and tips on activities designed to encourage children to
reconnect with the outdoors and the natural world. Department of Environmental
Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Pete Grannis said, "In a world full of iPods,
Xboxes and 500-channel digital cable, our youngsters are spending more and more
time indoors on the couch, disconnected from the natural world. Conservationist
for Kids gives children across the state a reason to venture outside, offering
fun and informative activities that we hope will spark a connection and concern
for nature that lasts a lifetime."- from

Center for the Environment at Cornell University "Promoting a
sustainable relationship between people and the environment as well as
ensuring a quality life for people here and throughout the world is what
grounds the vision of the Cornell Center for the Environment. Today's most
pressing environmental challenges make clear that all aspects of the
environment are connected, sometimes in surprising ways. Cornell has great
talent and capacity in diverse disciplines that can advance environmental
knowledge and solve environmental problems. The Center for the Environment
specializes in crafting interdisciplinary collaborations among scientists
and professors drawn from throughout Cornell and collaborating institutions.
The Center also works to apply new knowledge to environmental problems, and
to promote Cornell's new methods and information for environmental
stewardship needs around the world. The Center's specific objectives are to
catalyze interdisciplinary and multi-institutional research on the
environment, develop ways that science can solve environmental problems,
connect Cornell's environmental research capacity to needs around the world,
and to engage Cornell's scientific talent as new environmental issues and
problems emerge."
