At the end of 2004, the most recent compiled data available, about 8 percent of U.S. companies used alternative energy, which could be wind, solar or fuel cells, according to the American Wind Energy Association. • MPNnow.com: Can the skies help deflate energy costs in Webster? WEBSTER – A tower could soon pave the way for wind power in town. The town of Webster is hoping to construct a 164-foot tower to measure wind speed at the sewage treatment plant off Phillips Road. Webster has been looking into whether wind could effectively power the Walter W. Bradley Pollution Control Facility, thereby reducing energy costs. "(The facility has) extremely high energy use for the sewer department, with all the mechanical equipment and so forth, so what that would do would be to reduce the price of electric (for the town)," said Tony Casciani, Planning Board chairman. •  Veto freshens wind-power clash - Pataki move blocks takeover of 'renewables' fund — ALBANY — Among his 202 budget vetoes, Gov. George Pataki blocked a move by the Legislature to take control of grant money earmarked to spur renewable energy projects around the state. For that, environmentalists and some wind-power companies are glad. They fear that if the Legislature takes control of the approximately $20 million fund, the money could become lost in the budget shuffle — becoming just another fund for "pork-barrel" projects — and companies would be scared away from investing in the state. - (April 15, 2006) Daily Messenger

  • Company wants to measure Hamlin's wind speed and direction While other towns are studying placing moratoriums on wind tower construction, the Town of Hamlin is hosting a public hearing on a notion to construction meteorological towers (METs) in the town. The towers would measure whether wind energy would be viable in the town. At the April 10 public hearing, Competitive Wind Ventures of Massachusetts will make a presentation to the town on the construction of two towers that would be used to gather wind speed and direction statistics. The towers would be six inches in circumference and 197 feet tall. Town of Hamlin Supervisor Denny Roach said the towers would be equipped with "passive" antenna and anemometers. "The MET equipment would gather data of wind velocity at various heights," he said. "After a determined period of time the data would be collected, analyzed and the town would have to make a decision then as to if, or when, we would want to install wind towers." •  Towns struggle to set rules - Dolores Orman Staff Writer — As more private wind farm developers intensify efforts to find suitable sites for their projects, more communities are faced with the dilemma of what to do about them. At least 18 towns in the 10-county Rochester region — Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates counties — have been approached by such companies in recent years. And many communities — some that haven't even been contacted by developers — have imposed moratoriums to block wind farm proposals until they can get regulations on the books. •  Turbines' giant footprints generate wariness - Wind turbines are a mixed bag environmentally. The global benefits are clear but hilltops must be cleared of trees and brush for safety's sake and access roads must be built. Habitat disruption can expand far beyond a turbine's actual footprint. Studies worldwide support developers' claims that modern turbines are far less harmful to birds than the old-style turbines with lattice-work towers — ideal for perching — that actually attracted birds. Today, smooth towers, slower-moving blades and red flashing lights that help repel birds have made turbines less problematic. (December 4, 2005) Democrat and Chronicle

Sitting at his kitchen table in Cazenovia, Madison County, he glances out the window to watch a 326-foot-high wind turbine's blades spin through the season's first snow. The behemoth, though not literally in Foringer's back yard, looms over his deck, just 1,000 feet from his house, on a neighbor's property. Their idea — power-generating wind farms — may sound far-fetched. Wayne County, after all, lacks the high slopes of the Bristol Hills and the sea breezes of Long Island Sound, where similar projects have been proposed. But local proponents say the steep, narrow drumlins form perfect wind tunnels, and one wind energy company recently decided Wayne County was worth a visit.
